How would you advise transferring embroidery designs onto cloth?

This is such an important (and overlooked) aspect to beautiful embroidery. There are many methods of transfer. The different methods meet different criteria. For now, I will explain how I transfer delicate patterns onto delicate (washable) fabric – with the provision one can see through the fabric well enough to be able to trace the design.

First, I tape the design onto a flat surface.

Second, I position my fabric over the design, and secure THAT to the flat surface, as well. (Fabric can be so wiggly when your are drawing on it.)

Third, I further stabilize the fabric with my "non-drawing" hand by making a wide "V-shape" between my Index and Forefinger and put my hand flat on the fabric (with some pressure). The part of the design I will draw first is inside this "V".

Fourth, I trace the design with a "Washout Pencil" in BLUE. (While they are available, I would not use either the green or red pencil, as they tend to leave behind some color.)

Fifth, because the Washout Pencil is chalk-based, the design will eventually rub off. To be sure it stays in place for the duration of your embroidery, I spritz the design with a touch of hair spray. This will "fix" it in place. (I use men’s hairspray because they seem to have less scent and additives.)

When the embroidery is complete, clean it in slightly soapy, warm water. Rinse thoroughly. Your design markings should disappear easily.
